Amalfi Drive

The Amalfi coast is characterized by its location high over the sea, split and eroded in various point, with ravines and grottoes. Rocky and wild , it is an endless sequence of sharp rocks, spires, towers, that move down towards the sea on wich the hand of man has laid out a series of terraces planted with olives, citrus, trees, vineyards.

Towards the interior the ridge of the Lattari hills acts as backdrop. The name goes back to Roman times, perhaps because of the great quantity of milk (latte in italian) wich was produced here. Travelling from Positano towards Amalfi, the road moves inland in order to go round the Vallone of Positano. On high is the Natural Arch, a large opening in the rock below Monte S. Angelo, particullary evocative in the morning when the rays of the sun shine through.

After crossing a small river, the road turns back to the sea. From here on it is one ravine after another, one cliff after the other, while Positano appears and disappears from sight as one curve after the other is rounded.

The clearing Behind the small church of S.Pietro which stands on the point of the same name offers a splendid view of the gulf, from Punta Campanella to Capo Sottile.
